The Torneo Apertura 2026 kicks off Liga MX’s new season on July 16, with Necaxa hosting Atlante in the opening match.
Cruz Azul arrive as defending champions after winning the Clausura 2026 title, and will look to defend their crown. Mexican football’s giants include Club América, Chivas de Guadalajara, and Pumas UNAM.

Unlike most European leagues, Liga MX splits its season into two short tournaments each year, the Apertura (opening, July–December) and the Clausura (closing, January–May), with a separate champion crowned in each.
Here’s a simple breakdown of the Apertura 2026 format:
Regular Season All 18 teams play 17 matchdays, running from July 16 to November 22, 2026.
No Play-In Unlike some previous tournaments, this Apertura scraps the Play-In round entirely.
Direct Qualification The top 8 teams in the regular season table go straight into the Liguilla quarterfinals.
Liguilla (Play-offs) Two-legged knockout ties across Quarterfinals (Nov 25–29), Semifinals (Dec 2–6), and the Final (Dec 10 & 13).
Champion Crowned Decided over two legs. The away-goals rule is no longer in play. If level after 180 minutes, the higher-seeded team advances.
